Below right: This Historic Red Bus of Glacier National Park was built by the White Motor Company in the 1930's, then rebuilt in 2001 to run on propane. A fleet of these vintage motor coaches provide tours and shuttle services in the park.  Reader Mark Nave was a jammer (driver) of the Red Bus in the 1970's and he sent me the following anecdote in 2008:

" Tom: Your photo images of Glacier are fabulous and bring back fond memories of my three summers working out there in the park in the mid-seventies... Back in the day, the bus was always called a “Red” for obvious reasons and the driver was a “Jammer” because of the way they were able to shift the gears on these old 1930’s chassis White Motor Company buses that (in the seventies) seemed to be kept just operational enough to get the tourists safely over Logan Pass and around the park. I was a jammer for two summers and once had my clutch go out at Logan Pass. I had to offload my 'peeps' and make sure they had an alternate ride to their destination and wait for the head mechanic to drive from East Glacier to rescue the bus and me. Bud the mechanic wisely drove the bus back to the garage. It is interesting how names can evolve, though, as many of my fellow (especially non-transport) workers were already beginning to call the red buses jammer buses 30 (ouch!) years ago. Thanks for the pictures. Keep taking them! "

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is a World Heritage Site containing the following two parks:

  1. Glacier National Park, Montana, USA (this page). Image gallery of 120 Glacier National Park images from 2007.
  2. Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, CANADA.
These wonderful parks offer some of the best mountain scenery in the world, ripe for nature walks, day hikes, and backpacking trips. I am delighted by the fantastic and colorful rock patterns at every scale, from inches to miles, throughout these parks. Your chances are very good for seeing wild animals such as mountain goats, deer, marmots, ptarmigan.

"Tenu" is Latin for "thin" or "slender" and "petalum" is Greek for "a leaf" or "spread out flat" and refers to the spreading leaves.

Backpack from Logan Pass to Garden Wall to Swiftcurrent Creek to Many Glacier

Starting at Logan Pass Visitor Center parking lot, we backpacked the Northern Highline Trail along the Garden Wall to Granite Park, camped overnight (reservation required), then hiked over Swiftcurrent Pass and down the Swiftcurrent Valley to Many Glacier (15.2 miles one way, in two days, 1400 feet gain, with a car shuttle). Plus we dropped packs and hiked a 2-mile side trip up 1200 feet to spectacular Grinnel Lake Overlook. You can also day hike this route from either end.
